The Best Bets On The Craps Table

The Best Bets On The Craps Table

Perhaps no game is more intimidating in the casino than the craps table. But at the same time, it also is the most tantalizing; people yelling and clapping, cheering and laughing all night long. So many bets are being shouted and chips flying that newcomers are afraid to step up. That’s why it’s good to practice the mechanics of the game online until you’d feel comfortable with playing in person.

The Pass Line

The key to betting in craps is to start with simple, easier to understand wagers, and then build your comfort level from there. The simplest bet on the table is the “pass line” bet. It’s important to remember this bet should only be placed when the “button” (a plastic disc on both sides of the table) is in the “OFF” position. If the button says “ON”, just wait until that round ends. When playing online, the button should be “OFF” when the game starts, and then you’re good to go.

Place your wager on the pass line by placing chips directly on that spot of the game board. On the next roll, you’ll win if the dice show a total of 7 or 11, and lose if they show 2, 3, or 12. If one of these 5 numbers comes up, the button will stay off, and the process will be repeated with new betting.

If the dice show a total of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, then the game changes a little. We enter a sort of second round. The button is flipped to “ON”, and positioned next to the number that was rolled. Now the dice will be rolled repeated until either a 7 is rolled, which would mean the pass line wager loses or the first number is repeated and the pass line bet wins. So if your first roll is a 5, that becomes “the point”. If you then roll 5 again, you win your pass line bet. If a 7 comes first, you lose. If anything else comes, it’s just a push and you roll again.

The pass line provides a pretty low house advantage (approximately 1.41%), so it’s a great bet with which to start.

Don’t Pass

If you want to play the game a little differently, you could play the “don’t pass” bet. This time, you’re rooting for almost the exact opposite of the pass line eager. On the first roll, you lose if the bet is 7 or 11, and win if it’s 2 or 3. A 12 becomes a push (tie). If a point is established (you roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) then you need to roll a 7 before that number to win.

While the don’t pass bet has a house advantage slightly smaller than the pass line, most players stay away from this bet because you’re betting for the shooter to not make his point.

Placing Numbers

If you’re a good soldier and only bet the pass line, sometimes things can get a little boring between rolls. After all, you only win if the point is made (say, 5), and lose if a 7 comes up. What about all those other numbers that could be rolled? That’s when you see people throwing chips between rolls, betting on the 4, the 9, a “hard” 10, the “horn”, etc.

Here’s the simplest thing you need to know about all of those bets – they’re no good. Every single one of them has a higher house advantage than the pass or don’t pass line. If you’re trying to make money, avoid them! There is one slight exception, though. If you really want a little more action, you can put a “place” bet on the 6 or 8, or both. The casino’s advantage on those bets is less than 2%, so it’s not that much worse than the line bets.

Other Bets

If you’re playing to WIN, you should avoid all of the bets in the center of the table. The world, the horn, the hard ways, and everything else there has extremely high house advantages, some higher than 15%. It can be upsetting when you see someone hit those bets big, because they pay out a lot of money. But the math says those bets are BIG losers in the long run. Avoid them!

Grab Those Dice!

Stick to the pass line, take the free odds, and place the 6 or 8, and you will have the best chance at winning and lasting all night at the craps table. Good luck!
